Brake Service and Repair in Cherry Hill
One of the most common service items after oil and tires is brakes. This blog post is to help our customers understand what a brake replacement is and why it’s important.
What are brakes?
This may seem like a simple question, but most people only know brakes as far as their brake pedal. What happens after that is a marvel of engineering. Most modern vehicles have a brake by wire system, which means as you press on the pedal, you send a signal to the computer to slow down. This is done by mashing a composite brake pad against a metal brake rotor, somewhat similar to a pedal bike.
Why service them?
As you mash these parts together, they wear on each other. Over time your pads will get thinner and less efficient at heat dispersion, and your rotor will develop grooves and uneven wear. This lowers the efficiency and power of your brakes and can even cause unsafe conditions where you’re unable to stop in time.
What is a brake service?
At the most basic, it’s the replacement of these pads and rotors. Of course, there’s a little more to it. Technicians will check for the smooth operation of your brake caliper, which is the part that presses the pads against the rotors and bleed the brake system. The actual pressure of your brake system uses hydraulic pressure, and this fluid can wear from heat, and typically gets air introduced during the service. To counteract this, we bleed the fluid that’s near your caliper to remove air and replace it with fresh fluid. After this brake service, your brake pedal will be firm and your brakes will have a softer feel. This is because your thicker pads allow for more variable stopping power.
